Today we discussed why we love reading and writing and when and where we like to read or write the most. Below are some comments from the us. It is wonderful to see such positive attitudes about reading and writing.
In Math we are looking at big numbers and how to write them. We practiced how to write numbers up to billions in expanded form, however it takes so long to make all those zeros. So today we heard about a way to write big numbers with many zeros in a shorter way. It's called Powers of Ten. We watched a video that took us into space and back again into our bodies using powers of ten. After going so deep into our body that we ended up with something called atoms, we watched another video of a famous astrophysicist who spoke about the most amazing fact about the universe. We watched and listened in awe as we heard that the universe does not just surround us, but it's also inside of us. Today we heard about a student who were in Ms. Cedo's class in grade 7. She grew up to become an astrophysicist. Ms. Cedo gave us her email and asked if she could help us inquire about the universe. This was her response:
Hi all, Yes, I'd be happy to make a short video recording for your classes. Mike's idea of collecting questions from the students is a good one, too. If you can send me a list of their questions, as well as your ideas of what to cover, I can use them to plan what to include in my presentation. Best, -- Reina We will make a list of the questions we have so far or any other questions we have. Below are some websites with information about Dr. Reyes. The birth and death of the milky way. A short Biography of her life. Her professional profile Today we delved into the solar system, we read a book about stars and planets and other things in space. We discovered many interesting facts, vocabulary and came up with many useful questions. We also learned to look at a piece of writing and to look for the main idea. Lastly we explored the attitude of "curiosity", what it is and how it helps us to develop.
Yesterday we listen to the book "One Giant Leap" by Robert Burleigh read by Ms. Eksteen. We marveled at the history of the first man who walked on the moon. It made us wonder if Neil Armstrong was still alive, after a google search we found out he passed away exactly one year ago
And just like that the first week of school flew by. We settled into class, had a chance to follow the schedule for the week, created agreements for our class, received notebooks and stationary, and started with some work in UOI, Language and Math. This morning the whole elementary school also came together to decide who would be the captain of each of our houses, Jirisan, Hallasan and Soraksan. Monday the final announcement will be made. The grade 5's already showed that they were risk-takers by standing up in front of their houses and making speeches. What a great start of the year. Some important information for the start of the school year.
This year, all permission slips will be sent in a Google Form format. In order for me to get to know you a little better, I would greatly appreciate you taking a few moments to fill in the first Google Form of the year with your contact details and a few questions about yourself. Click here to access the form. (I have also emailed this form to all parents. My email address is: [email protected], alternatively, click here for a direct link to my email or click the email icon at the top right of the blog. Documents: More information about what we are covering in class will be posted on the blog by this Friday. Homework In Grade 5, the students are expected to complete approximately 1 hour's worth of homework a day. This year, the homework schedule will be given out straight away. The homework will be a mixture of reading, writing, spelling, maths and additional UOI work. We will spend some time, in class, discussing this and working out a good way to manage time. Field Trips Our first Unit this year, is about astronomy. We will be exploring the ideas of curiosity and integrity and how these lead to scientific discoveries. We are planning a field trip to the planetarium at Ulsan Park in the first couple of weeks of term; information will be available as soon as possible. In our second Unit, we look at peace and conflict resolution in the context of the Korean Conflict. For this unit, we plan to take the Grade 5 students to the DMZ in Seoul. The camp will take place between October 8th-11th and information will be available shortly. Electronic Equipment In Grade 5, we believe that the use of electronic equipment can support learning if used appropriately. Therefore, we would like to invite the students to bring electronics for use within the classroom. This may include laptops, MP3 players, iPads, etc. The equipment will be strictly for use within the classroom; it will not be used at break-times or lunchtimes unless under certain special circumstances agreed by the student, the parents and the homeroom teacher. Health and well-being
Necessary equipment It would be useful for your child to bring the following items into school everyday:
