LanguagEWe kick off this term in language with persuasive language in reading, writing and advertisements. We will be looking at news reports and write some ourselves.
We will be following a workshop model in the writing class, teaching small mini-lessons about aspects of writing, like organizing a persuasive text or persuasive vocabulary. Then the students spend some time writing in class applying those aspects to their writing. Lastly we share our writing with each other to get some feedback and ideas. We will also be using the 7 Keys to comprehension we have learned so far and continue to focus on the last few keys. We will practice these comprehension strategies while reading stories together as a whole class, reading texts, articles or advertisements and in our book clubs. We have created book clubs where 3 students read one book together. They decide together how many pages to read each week and meet in class to talk about their inferences, ideas, questions and favorite parts. In Spelling we are continuing with our spelling boxes, while we work in Math, UOI or with texts we identify new or challenging words to add to our spelling boxes. We write spelling tests with our partners and only study the words we get wrong. We also include words from our personal notebooks to our spelling boxes. At the end of the term we will pick words from our boxes to generate one final spelling test. |
